Boost for Broncos as Ennis cleared

Boost for Broncos as Ennis cleared

8/09/2008 3:05:46 PM

In-form hooker Michael Ennis is free to take his place in the Brisbane Broncos team to play Sydney Roosters in Friday's opening NRL finals clash after being cleared of a "prowler" tackle on Newcastle's Kurt Gidley.

In a major boost to the Broncos' hopes of securing a home semi-final in the second week of the NRL finals, the match review committee found Ennis had no case to answer after the incident in last Friday's 24-2 win over Newcastle.

However, the Roosters also had their share of good news. Utility Setaimata Sa was not charged over an off-the-ball hit on Ben Creagh in the Roosters' 10-0 defeat of St George Illawarra, while prop Mark O'Meley will take his place in the match if he pleads guilty to a careless high tackle charge.

The O'Meley tackle left Dragons prop Jason Ryles dazed, but it was only deemed to warrant a grade one careless charge. If O'Meley pleads guilty, the offence will attract a penalty of 95 demerit points, with 100 points equating to a one game ban.

The incidents involving Sa and O'Meley both came under scrutiny from the match review committee, who had requested further camera angles of O'Meley's first half tackle on Jason Ryles to determine the point of contact.
